With nearly 2000 wineries and 60,000 wines, Californian wines have grown to the top at the global level. California is one the biggest wine producing regions in the United States. California produces nearly 90 percent of all wines produced in USA. California wines from the most interesting soils and terroirs for the wine makers, wine growers and wine lovers all of them. Californian wine producers offer more diversity of not only styles of wine, but also the grape varietals that are planted in the region. All the noble varieties are planted: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Riesling.

Today, Chardonnay is the most popular grape planted in California, with close to 95,000 planted acres. Cabernet Sauvignon is a distant second with almost 80,000 acres planted. Merlot and white Zinfandel also enjoy immense popularity. Red wine continues to be the dominant shade of wine produced in California. In total, more than 525,000 acres are planted for wine grapes in California today in about 110 different, unique AVA’s, American Viticultural Areas. California is geographically a very diverse region and varies greatly in the range of climates and terroirs. Most Californian wines favour simpler and more fruit dominant characteristics. The reliably warm weather allows many wineries to use very ripe fruits which create more fruit forward wines.
